Why Can't I Lose Weight?!

I was first introduced to Mary and her Ideal Protein clinic a few years ago.  I had a put on more weight than I was comfortable with and was starting to have some health concerns.   Being diagnosed with Hypothyroidism a few years prior, I was stuck in a constant state of fatigue, with my hair thinning and ended up being overall uncomfortable with how I looked and felt. 

               A friend of mine suggested that I attend an Ideal Protein workshop since she believed the program to be more about health and wellness with the addition of weight loss.  She was completely right!  After listening to Mary explain in detail Syndrome X and the dysfunction that was potentially occurring, I was ready to commit to the program and follow all of the guidelines in order to get my health back and lose the excess weight that I couldn’t get rid of.

               Within the first four weeks I had lost over ten pounds and was feeling amazing.  My sleep schedule was back to a normal level, I had energy and confidence again and even my hairdresser noticed how thick my hair was becoming!  Overall I went from 152 pounds down to 133 pounds and I’ve been able to keep the weight off and maintain my health through the excellent coaching and teaching that was provided as well.

Last year my New Year’s resolution was to lose weight.  Every year I set the same goal but with a different program: liquid-only diets, high-fiber diets or whatever the latest fad was.  So in 2012, when the first day of January rolled around, I decided to just pay attention to what I was eating and get to the gym a few times a week.  I figured that in no time I would be able to drop the weight and look like the toned man I used to be but that didn’t happen.  After six weeks of trying on my own, I had only lost 2 pounds and my clothes weren’t fitting any differently.  It was the same result as all of the years prior and I was so disappointed. 

One day, I ran into one of my friends that had lost weight. He looked AWESOME, and so healthy! He lives in Maryland and had gone to an Ideal Protein clinic there. I found Ideal Wellness here in Pittsburgh. I was thrilled that I was able to make the program fit into my lifestyle and could cut out my gym trips until I got my weight under control since my heaviness was taking a toll on my knees.  I had no idea that what I thought was healthy eating was really making me gain pounds.  The foods available were satisfying and I was so full that I actually had a hard time eating everything I was supposed to.  I’ve never been on a diet where they want you to eat!  After dropping close to 60 pounds, the staff helped to transition me off the program, get me back into my regular workouts and I look and feel great again.  And the best part was that in January of this year I didn’t have to worry about making a resolution to lose weight.

Husband and Wife Lose Weight Together!

When I started the diet, I wanted to lose weight and had been trying to gradually without much luck.  I didn’t feel well.  I was constantly bloated and always felt blah even though I was exercising forty-five minutes to an hour every day.  Also, my husband needed to lose 50 pounds, which was the larger reason we both decided to participate on the diet.  I thought that by doing the diet I could be his support system.  At 44, he was overweight, had high blood pressure and high cholesterol.

I am a nurse, so when we met with Mary Emmerling, the Clinic Director at Ideal Wellness and Weight Loss, the information and the construct of the diet protocol that she explained to us made sense and was in line with my understanding of a healthy diet.

               The first week was the hardest.  We had to change some bad habits.  Cravings were there and had to be dealt with but eventually the program became routine.   The structure was really helpful as we made lifestyle changes.  I truly think it all comes down to structure, weekly weigh-ins for accountability and planning ahead; which removes stress.  Taking Ideal Protein bars on the run instead of reaching for fast food helps too!  We’ve really been able to incorporate this program as a family.  Even on the go and having the necessity to occasionally eat at restaurants, we know how to navigate our way through and make better choices.  Most places are very accommodating these days.

I’ve lost a total of thirty pounds and 20.75 inches over my body.  I feel great now!  I have a lot more energy and my stomach doesn’t hurt; the bloating is gone.  I’ve been able to listen to my body.  I feel energized and healthier.  I am very in tune with my body now and can listen to what it is telling me.   If I need to eat, I eat.  My husband has lost 55 pounds to date and a total of 21.75 inches.  His line of work requires that he keeps night hours.  Now I pack a little blue cooler and fill it with water and all of the appropriate foods on the program.  This is a WAY better option than running through the drive-through for a fried chicken sandwich in the middle of the night.  He makes much smarter and healthier food choices now!

I first came into Grice Chiropractic with back pain and it was bothering me to the point that my work ability was compromised.  I wanted to start working out again but couldn’t.  I also knew that I had to lose weight since I was heavier than I had been in my whole life. 

While being treated for my back and sciatica, I met Mary.  During a treatment, Dr. Garrett Young suggested that I meet with her for some weight loss options and I soon started on the Ideal Protein Program at Ideal Wellness and Weight Loss.  I had never been on a diet before, nor did I care to.  At first I was skeptical, I saw the results were working for some, but it turned into a lifestyle change for me.  I went from eating one large meal a day to many smaller meals.

               The most amazing thing for me was the immediate results.  When we first started, we used a scale that wasn’t even able to read a measurement on my weight.  I was THAT heavy.  Within two weeks I was down over twenty pounds.  My energy level went higher than it had in years.  Once I began working out again, my energy really kicked into high gear.  One of the great aspects of the program is that I could lose weight without exercising.  I love to exercise and know that it is important, but my health challenges prevented me from doing so in the beginning.  Having lost a measurable amount of weight prior to beginning my exercise program only helped my progress when I was finally able to start.  My sciatica is better and I am holding my chiropractic adjustments better than before my weight loss.   Losing the weight helped in all aspects of my life.

               I started the program around 360.  I now weigh 225.  That’s 135 pounds to date!  My pant size was 44-46 and now I wear a 34-36 as well as XL shirts instead of the XXXL that I used to wear.  My fitted hats don’t fit anymore and I use them as buckets.  Before people used to guess my age as much older than I actually was but now I’m always mistaken for younger!

Health Challenges

Before I started the program, I was discouraged about myself and my weight.  I was at the point where I wouldn’t visit anybody or go out.  I was fatigued, and going to two different doctors, seeing both my PCP and Rheumatologist.  I was diagnosed with Lupus and along with that came other connected auto-immune challenges.  I have Multiple Connective Tissue Disease.  It is very painful, deteriorating, and shows with Raynaud’s in my hands.  I have CREST disease also as a result of the Lupus.  I lived everyday with pain.  I would have to sit still for an hour in the morning just to get the day started.  I couldn’t even make a fist.  My blood pressure was high.  I could not get out of a car and I would try to hide my pain and struggle to not to walk hunched over.  I thought that I was destined to die young.

               Even though I had been on so many different diets (even Fen-phen) when I saw an Ideal Protein pamphlet in an office, I had to call.  The first week on Ideal Protein I felt so much better, but in different ways!  I noticed that I was losing weight and inches.  That didn’t seem to happen before. 

When I went back to my Rheumatologist, he was amazed!  After four months on the program, I can make a fist and I am pain free.  I get up with a smile on my face.  I don’t use a heating pad for an hour in the morning and I am off all pain killers.  Not only am I off of my blood pressure medicine but I’ve been able to cut back significantly on the medications that I take to treat the Lupus! I am so excited! 

My personality has changed.  I can put clothes on and feel good!!  I feel like a better wife, mother and grandmother.  I know now what foods go together and I know how to eat.  I have not felt this good physically or mentally for 20-25 years!!! 

Coming in to see Mary every week was so helpful.  I had someone to ask questions, and give guidance along the way.  I’m so grateful for the encouragement I received.  I’ve lost a total of 50 pounds!!  I never believed that this could happen and I will NEVER feel bad like I did, ever again.
